1) What is a Driving Licence?

  • A Driving Licence (DL) is an official government document.
  • It allows you to legally drive a vehicle (bike, car, bus, truck, etc.) on public roads in India.
  • It shows that you know traffic rules and can drive safely.
  • Types of licences:

2) Eligibility & Documents Required

Learner’s Licence (LL):

  • Minimum age 18 years for most vehicles.
  • 16 years for a motorcycle without gear (≤50cc) with guardian consent.
  • 20 years for driving a transport vehicle (bus, truck).

Documents Required (for all applicants):

  1. Proof of Age [Any one] – Birth certificate, school certificate, Aadhaar, passport, PAN card.
  2. Proof of Address [Any one] – Aadhaar, voter ID, utility bills, passport, rent agreement.
  3. Identity Proof [Any one] – Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, voter ID.
  4. Passport-size photographs – Usually 2–4 photos.
  5. Medical Certificate – Required if over 50 years old or applying for a commercial vehicle licence.

3) Ways to Apply for a Driving Licence

A) Online (via Parivahan/Sarathi Portal)

  1. Go to https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in
  2. Select your state (Maharashtra)
  3. Choose Learner’s Licence or Driving Licence
  4. Fill in personal details, age, address, and identity info
  5. Upload required documents and photos
  6. Book a test slot (MCQ or practical)
  7. Pay the fee online (UPI/card/netbanking)
  8. Attend the test at RTO or online (some tests are online)

Note: Some RTOs still require you to visit in person for verification or tests.

B) Offline (At the RTO Office)

  1. Visit your nearest RTO
  2. Collect and fill forms
  3. Attach documents and photos
  4. Submit forms and pay fees
  5. Schedule your test
  6. Appear for the test at the RTO

4) What Happens After Applying?

Stage 1: Application Received

  • Your application is submitted and payment confirmed
  • Status: Filed / Payment confirmed

Stage 2: Document Verification

  • RTO checks your documents, photos, and medical fitness
  • Missing documents can cause delays or rejection
  • Time: ~7–21 days

Stage 3: Test Slot & Examination

  • Learner’s Licence Test: Multiple-choice questions on traffic rules, road signs, and signals. Pass mark ~60%
  • Permanent Licence: Apply after 30 days of LL (valid for 6 months). Must pass a practical driving test at RTO

Stage 4: Licence Issuance

  • After passing all tests, your DL is issued
  • May get digital copy online or printed copy at RTO
  • Time: Usually 3–6 weeks

  • Test scheduled
  • Document verification in progress
  • Approved / Licence Issued
  • Rejected (with reason)

🕐 Common delays happen at the verification stage.


7) Important Tips

  • Fill forms carefully – Wrong names or addresses cause rejection
  • Carry originals + photocopies
  • Keep test reminders – Missing a slot may need rescheduling
