1) What is a Passport?

A passport is an official document issued by the Government of India.

It is used to:

  • Prove your identity and nationality as an Indian citizen
  • Travel to other countries and return to India
  • Apply for visas, jobs abroad, higher studies, or long-term travel

Your passport contains:

  • Your name and date of birth
  • Your photograph and signature
  • Your passport number and other personal details

Without a passport, international travel is not possible.

2) Documents Required for Passport Application

Whether you are applying for a new passport or renewal, you must submit documents for identity and address proof.

Commonly Accepted Documents

Proof of Identity (any one):

  • Aadhaar Card (with QR code)
  • Voter ID
  • PAN Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Driving Licence

Other Documents:

  • Private or office ID cards are usually not accepted
  • Aadhaar may not be accepted as DOB proof if the date of birth is unclear

3) Ways to Apply for a Passport

You can apply in three ways. Online application is the most common and recommended.

A) Online Application (Recommended)

Through Passport Seva Portal

Steps:

  1. Register / Login
    Visit: https://passportindia.gov.in
    Register using your email ID and mobile number.
  2. Fill the Application Form
    • Choose Fresh Passport or Re-issue
    • Fill personal, family, and contact details
    • Upload photo and signature (follow size rules)
  3. Pay Fees & Book Appointment
    • Pay online (UPI, card, net banking, SBI challan)
    • Book appointment at PSK or Post Office PSK
  4. Print Application
    • Print the form with ARN (Appointment Reference Number)

B) Through mPassport Seva Mobile App

You can also apply using the mPassport Seva app (Android / iOS).

Steps are simple:

  • Register on the app
  • Fill application form
  • Pay fees and book appointment
  • Track application status later

📌 Documents are submitted in person on appointment day.

C) In-Person via District Passport Cell (DPC)

  • Visit your local DPC or PSK
  • Submit printed form and original documents
  • Pay fees (usually via demand draft)
  • Collect acknowledgment slip with file number

4) What Happens After You Apply?

A) Appointment & Document Verification

  • Visit PSK/POPSK on your appointment date
  • Carry all original documents
  • Staff will verify documents
  • Photo and fingerprints are taken

B) Police Verification

  • Required in most fresh applications
  • Police officer may:
    • Visit your home, or
    • Call you to the police station

Be available and cooperative.
Carry original documents if asked.

  • Address is unclear
  • Documents have mismatched details
  • Applicant is not reachable

C) Passport Printing & Delivery

  • Once approved, passport is printed
  • Dispatched to your address by Speed Post
